What’s Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese massage technique with the use of stone. Literally, “Guasha” translates as “scrapping everything bad away” (where Gua in Chinese means “one-way movement” and Sha means “bad”). The “bad” is removed using a smooth flat plate of wood, bone, horn, or stone. Modern instruments for this ritual are most often made of jade, onyx or quartz. The procedure is performed by scraping movements along the massage lines of the face and body. Red marks after the massage are normal, this is due to microscopic hemorrhages that are beneficial to the body.

Why does it work?

Stones have been used in the East since ancient times, that’s why Asians have such high trust in them. Besides, this method does not require special medical knowledge and additional devices, so it is convenient to do Gua Sha massage at home.

Due to the pressure that is exerted during the massage (both back and face), blood circulation improves, and therefore, the skin tones and wrinkles are getting smoother.

Effect

The effect of Gua Sha can be seen already after the first session. Gua Sha masters love to show the difference when one half of the face is already worked out, and the second wasn’t yet. The half where the massage is performed is usually more radiant, toned, healthy, and looks less swollen because excess water was removed.

Gua sha affects the well-being and health improvement of the entire body, as it activates our lymphatic system. Gua sha treatment relaxes the muscles, gets the energy and blood moving, and reduces any puffiness. It boosts the blood circulation which takes away toxins and brings in oxygen and nutrients.

Contraindications!

As a natural healing remedy, Gua Sha is safe. It’s not supposed to be painful, but the procedure may change the appearance of your skin. Because it involves rubbing or scraping the skin with a massage tool, tiny blood vessels known as capillaries near the surface of your skin can burst. This can result in skin bruising and minor bleeding. Bruising usually disappears within a couple of days.

Although Gua Sha is done relatively gently (you’re in control of the pressure and the shape of the tool you use), it’s not for you if you are prone to broken capillaries. It should also be avoided over broken skin or acne breakouts.

In addition to universal contraindications: high fever, cancer, and general malaise, Gua Sha is not recommended for any invasive procedures: injections, fillers, botox, etc. Tool movements can displace the filler and remove it prematurely. So it’s best to wait three to six months before returning to the massage. Any inflammation, active stages of acne, rashes, allergies can also be considered contraindications. During this period, you can focus on working with the neck, thereby helping lymph soften the inflammatory process.

The tools

The tools should all be carved with curves, rounded knobs, and points to fit within the curvatures of the face and press down on the meridian points, or pressure points in which traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe vital life energy known as Qi flows through. Usually, therapists using tools made of stone, but nowadays technology ahead of obsolete methods. As we all know Koreans are the leading country in the produce of beauty gadgets. Their women spend tones of money to look perfect and their efforts do not go unnoticed. How do they achieve such brilliant results without getting broke?

How to?

You should move the tool on your face along the massage lines: from the center of the forehead to the temples, from the wings of the nose to the temples, from the tip of the nose up to the center of the forehead, from the corners of the mouth to the middle of the ears, from the center of the chin to the earlobes.

If you have deep wrinkles on the forehead, you need to carefully smooth them from the interbrow folds to the hairline. When you are working on the neck and décolleté, movements in the center should go up to the chin, and on the sides – in the opposite direction, from the jaw to the collarbones.
